The 1902 Double Eagle is a curious coin in Proof as the Mint went from largely frosting the devices to almost eliminating them entirely. One can only speculate if certain collectors began complaining about the look of the coins, but the fact is the non Cameo effect is totally normal for this date. Outliers are an extreme exception to this rule and are virtually never found.
1902 was a fascinating year in America with trials and tribulations. In Los Angeles, Thomas Edison opened the first movie theater, titled the ‘Electric Theater.’ America was being enlightened to a new age and time.
Only 114 examples were struck and an estimate of 35-45 pieces remain in any condition today. This is one of the finest examples of the date we’ve ever seen and is on the cusp of the ultra-rare Cameo designation as being a * Star * appointed example by NGC. It is also Plus graded and looks every bit the part of a PF66 as any other we’ve seen.
The NGC star (★) designation on a coin indicates that it has exceptional eye appeal for its assigned grade. This means the coin is visually more desirable than others of the same grade due to factors like vibrant toning, intense luster, or strong cameo contrast.
