1914 U.S. $20 Saint-Gaudens Matte CAC PCGS PR63

$110,000.00 USD

– SOLD
The Saint-Gaudens double eagle is a twenty-dollar gold coin, or double eagle, produced by the United States Mint from 1907 to 1933. The coin is named after its designer, the sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, who designed the obverse and reverse. It is considered by many to be the most beautiful of U.S. coins. It is fully struck with nicely preserved surfaces and is a highlight of the extensive Proof gold coin offerings in this sale. The penultimate issue in the Proof Saint-Gaudens double eagle series, 70 coins dated 1914 were produced, all of which were struck between September 28 and December 19. No more than two-thirds of these coins seem to have been distributed, the balance of the mintage destroyed through melting in the Mint.
