1908 $5 Indian Head NGC PF67
1908 was the first year of issue for the new Indian half eagle design. The coins featured sunken-relief as opposed to the raised relief on all other United States coinage issues. While not appreciated at the time, the coins are very popular with collectors today. Some 167 proof half eagles were struck by the Philadelphia Mint in 1908. While this might seem low, it is actually the second highest proof mintage of the entire series after the 1910. Less than half likely survive today, but those that do are usually in good shape and often grade gem or better.
