1747M 1/2E NGC MS63

$3,735.00 USD

The 1747 Half Escudo was struck at the Royal Mint of Madrid (mintmark "M") under King Ferdinand VI, who reigned from 1746 to 1759. This is a particularly significant issue as it represents a one-year type in this series, making it inherently scarce and desirable to collectors of Spanish colonial coinage.
The coin is composed of 0.917 fine gold, weighs approximately 1.69 grams (≈0.0541 oz), and measures 15 mm in diameter. Despite its small size, the Half Escudo was an important fractional gold coin used in circulation throughout the Spanish Empire, including its extensive colonial territories in the Americas.

The obverse features a bust of Ferdinand VI facing right with the legend "FERDINANDVS VI DEI GRATIA 1747" (Latin for "Ferdinand VI by the Grace of God"). Ferdinand VI's reign, though relatively short, was notable for his attempts to reform Spain's economy and maintain neutrality in European conflicts following the War of Austrian Succession.

The reverse displays the crowned Spanish coat-of-arms with the legend "HISPANIARUM REX" (King of the Spains). The mintmark "M" (Madrid) and assayer's initials J·M·B appear on the reverse, indicating the Madrid Mint and its officials who were responsible for ensuring the coin's proper weight and fineness.

An NGC grade of MS63 ("Choice Mint State") indicates that the coin is fully uncirculated with original luster and only light contact marks or imperfections. This grade places the coin several steps above circulated examples, which typically show varying degrees of wear from handling and circulation.
