1656 Great Britain Cromwell Gold 50 Shilling PCGS PR63 CAM

$1,495,000.00 USD

– SOLD

This coin was minted at the Tower Mint in London, and it is widely considered one of the finest examples of portraiture in English numismatics, crafted by the famed Dutch engraver Thoas Simon.

The obverse of the coin features a laureate portrait of Oliver Cromwell, designed by Thomas Simon, who was Cromwell’s chief engraver. The portrait is surrounded by Cromwell's Latin titles, emphasizing his role as Lord Protector.

The reverse displays a crowned shield of the Protectorate, which is somewhat ironic given Cromwell's refusal of the crown. shield is accompanied by the motto "PAX QVÆRITVR BELLO," which translates to "Peace is sought by war". This motto reflects the turbulent times and Cromwell's military background.

According to some experts, there could be as many as 11 total gold 50 shillings known in existence when considering private collections and museums around the world, however there are only 4 known to exist outside of museums today, making the Cromwell gold 50 Shilling 1656 one of the greatest numismatic rarities in the early English milled series
