1741 Sicily Gold Oncia PCGS MS63

$5,318.00 USD

The 1741 Sicily Gold Oncia was issued during the early reign of Charles VII of Naples and Sicily, later Charles III of Spain. Struck at the Palermo Mint during the formative years of Bourbon rule, the Oncia was the most prestigious gold denomination circulating in Sicily, reinforcing royal legitimacy and economic authority in a region emerging from decades of dynastic transition.

Obverse: bears a laureate, draped bust of Carlo to right; the reverse shows a phoenix rising from flames (with radiant sunface above, date below) – the Bourbon "Resurrecting Phoenix" motif symbolizing Sicily's rebirth.

The legend reads "CAR·D·G·SIC·ET·HIE·REX·HIS·IN." (Carolus dei gratia Siciliae et Hierusalem rex Hispaniarum), identifying Carlo as King of Sicily and Jerusalem by the grace of God. This bold design and historical link to the Bourbon monarchy make the Oncia highly attractive to collectors of Italian and Spanish colonial issues.

Reverse: Crowned and quartered arms of the Bourbon monarchy, incorporating symbols of Naples, Sicily, Aragon, and Jerusalem. The date “1741” and Palermo mintmark “P” appear below.

This PCGS MS63 1741 Oncia is a high-grade, super-rare coin: virtually all surviving examples are in lower grade, and only a few dozen Oncias of any date have ever been certified MS. The coin's "MS63" grade places it above average strike with scattered marks, making it one of the finest attainable for this type.
