1492-1503 Gold Florin Alexander VI NGC MS64

$13,973.00 USD

Struck at the Rome Mint during the papacy of Alexander VI (Rodrigo Borgia), this Doppio Fiorino exemplifies the opulence and political ambition of the Renaissance Papacy. Alexander VI's tenure (1492–1503) was marked by significant political maneuvering and the expansion of papal influence, aspects reflected in the grandeur of his coinage. The Doppio Fiorino, or double florin, served both as a high-denomination currency and a statement of ecclesiastical authority.

Obverse: Features the papal coat of arms of the Borgia family beneath the papal tiara and crossed keys of Saint Peter, symbolizing the Pope's spiritual authority and temporal power. The Latin legend “ALEXANDER VI PONT MAX” encircles the design, affirming his position as Pontifex Maximus.

Reverse: Depicts the Miraculous Catch of Fish, illustrating Saint Peter in a boat hauling in a net filled with fish, a reference to his calling as a "fisher of men." The inscription “SANCTVS PETRVS ALMA ROMA” emphasizes the sanctity of Saint Peter and the city of Rome.

Graded NGC MS64, this coin exhibits exceptional preservation with sharp details and lustrous surfaces. The intricate designs are well-struck, and the fields retain a remarkable degree of original mint brilliance. Such high-grade examples are exceedingly rare, with few known specimens achieving this level of preservation
