1796 Gold Ducat 'City View' NGC MS61

$9,936.00 USD

Minted in 1796 by the Free Imperial City of Frankfurt, this gold ducat—known as the “Kontributionsdukat” or Contribution Ducat—was issued to raise funds demanded by occupying French Revolutionary forces. The coin's design serves both as a fundraising instrument and a poignant testament to the city's resilience during a tumultuous period in European history.

Obverse: Features a seven-line German inscription within a laurel wreath: “AUS DEN GEFÄSSEN DER KIRCHEN UND BÜRGER DER STADT FRANCKFURT. 1796.” This translates to “From the vessels of the churches and citizens of the city of Frankfurt,” referencing the melted gold and silver items contributed by the city's inhabitants to meet the French army's demands.

Reverse: Depicts a detailed cityscape of Frankfurt as viewed from the River Main, showcasing the Imperial Cathedral of Saint Bartholomew, the Old Bridge (Alte Brücke), and sailing boats on the river. This intricate engraving captures the city's architectural heritage and its strategic riverside location.

Graded NGC MS61, this specimen exhibits strong detail with minor handling marks consistent with its grade. The coin's surfaces retain significant luster, and the strike is well-executed, highlighting the intricate cityscape and inscriptions. The edge is engrailed, a characteristic feature of this issue.
