ENGLAND GOLD ROYAL, KING EDWARD IV. THE FINEST KNOWN!

The Double Excelente was minted during the joint reign of Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile. Their marriage in 1469 unified Spain, and their reign marked the beginning of Spain's rise as a major European power. The coin was introduced as part of their efforts to standardize and strengthen the Spanish currency system.

The obverse features the crowned and draped busts of Ferdinand and Isabella facing each other. This imagery symbolizes their joint rule and partnership.

The reverse displays a crowned shield with the arms of Castile and Aragon, divided by a mintmark. The legend around the shield usually reads "FERNANDVS ET ELISABET" (Ferdinand and Isabella).
