The 1406-1454 Spain Double Banda, struck during the reign of King John II of Castile, is a rare and historically significant gold coin from medieval Spain. King John II ruled Castile for nearly half a century, a period marked by internal noble conflicts and the growing power of the monarchy. His reign set the stage for the rise of his son, King Henry IV, and later, the unification of Spain under the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella. This coin reflects the economic and political strength of Castile during the late Middle Ages.

The obverse features the crowned royal coat of arms of Castile and León, with the distinctive "double band" (dobla de banda), a symbol of unity and royal authority. The intricate details and Gothic lettering surrounding the shield enhance its regal presence. The reverse displays a large cross adorned with fleurs-de-lis, a design that signifies the strong influence of Christianity in Spanish rule and the Reconquista efforts during the period.

Graded AU55 by PCGS, this coin retains much of its original detail, with strong strikes and impressive surfaces for a medieval gold piece. The combination of historical significance, intricate design, and well-preserved condition makes the 1406-1454 Spain Double Banda a highly desirable collectible, offering a glimpse into the grandeur of medieval Castile.
