1906 $20 Gold Liberty PCGS PR65 test - DO NOT BID

DO NOT BID

The 1906 $20 Liberty Head Double Eagle, certified PCGS PR65 Cameo and CAC-approved, is an extraordinary survivor from a transitional moment in U.S. numismatics. By this time, America’s infrastructure boom—fueled by railways and the early adoption of automobiles—was transforming daily life and mobility. Yet 1906 also bore witness to tragedy with the catastrophic San Francisco Earthquake, a stark reminder of nature’s volatility amid rapid progress.

Obverse: Liberty’s classical profile faces left, crowned with a coronet inscribed “LIBERTY,” framed by 13 stars representing the original colonies and the date “1906” at the base. The surfaces are highly reflective, with frosted details producing striking cameo contrast.

Reverse: A majestic heraldic eagle holds arrows and an olive branch beneath a large “IN GOD WE TRUST” ribbon and thirteen stars, symbolizing strength and peace. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and denomination TWENTY DOLLARS frame the periphery.

With only 94 proofs struck and most lost to melting or impaired over time, few Cameo-designated examples survive. The Mint had begun transitioning toward a matte proof finish by this point, making this mirror-finish cameo an especially rare and desirable outlier. No Deep Cameo examples are known for this issue, and 1906 has proven to be one of the scarcest dates to appear at public auction in recent decades.

Provenanced to the legendary Bob Simpson Collection, this piece combines rarity, elite preservation, and exceptional visual appeal—traits that place it firmly among the upper echelon of proof Liberty Head Double Eagles.
