The 1364–1380 France Gold Franc à pied of King Charles V is a stately late medieval gold issue, struck during the early years of the Valois dynasty’s consolidation following the turmoil of the Hundred Years’ War. Known for its architectural elegance and regal imagery, this type is among the most visually arresting of the royal French coinage series.
Obverse: Charles V stands facing beneath a Gothic canopy, holding a long sword and a scepter topped with the Hand of Justice. He is clad in full regalia and flanked by fleurs-de-lis. The legend reads: KAROLVS DI GR FRA?CORV RЄX — Charles, by the Grace of God, King of the Franks.
Reverse: Cross fleurée centered within a polylobe tressure. Crowns and fleurs-de-lis alternate in the angles of the cross, and additional fleurs-de-lis are placed within the lobes. The legend reads: + XPC VI?CIT XPC RЄGNAT XPC IMPЄRAT — Christ conquers, Christ reigns, Christ commands.
Graded PCGS MS64, this piece is sharply struck and fully lustrous, showcasing the coin’s intricate design elements and architectural flourishes. It is a superbly preserved example of a type seldom encountered in this high a grade.
