1350-1364 Gold Royal King Jean II Le Bon NGC MS63

$11,178.00 USD

The 1350–1364 France Gold Royal d’Or of King Jean II le Bon, struck during the second emission of April 1359, is a majestic and symbolic medieval gold issue from the height of the Hundred Years' War. Issued under the Valois monarchy, this piece reflects both regal authority and religious devotion during a turbulent era of dynastic conflict and national identity formation.

Obverse: King Jean II stands facing, crowned and robed, holding a scepter and orb within a gothic architectural canopy. The legend reads: IOh'ЄS : DЄI : GRA | FRAnCORV : RЄX — Jean, by the Grace of God, King of the Franks.

Reverse: A large cross fleurée within a quadrilobe tressure, with fleurs-de-lis in each quadrant. The surrounding Latin motto reads: + XP'C : VInCIT : XP'C : RЄGnAT : XP'C : IMPЄRAT — Christ conquers, Christ reigns, Christ commands.

Graded NGC MS63, this specimen is lightly double-struck in the legends and exhibits minor softness in the central obverse, yet retains strong visual integrity. The coin is richly toned with areas of residual luster, and represents one of the finest known preserved examples of a mid-14th century French royal gold issue.
