Struck during the later medieval period, this 1340–1393 Gold Gulden, graded NGC AU58, represents an important transitional coinage from the fragmented regional economies of the Holy Roman Empire toward more standardized trade issues.
Obverse: Features St. John the Baptist standing, holding a banner of the cross and clothed in a simple robe, symbolizing humility and spiritual authority. His name is abbreviated in the surrounding legend, a hallmark of religious influence on coin design during the period.
Reverse: Displays a richly detailed Florentine lily—a direct nod to the Florin standard that inspired the gulden’s inception. Its intricate curvature and pronounced stamens are emphasized by the deep strike, with the date below clearly visible.
Despite minor circulation friction, this example retains strong visual impact with golden luster peeking through the protected fields.
