BYZANTINE EMPIRE Justinian I (AD 527-565) AV solidus NGC MS 4/5 4/5

$2,789.00 USD

– SOLD

This gold solidus of Emperor Justinian I exemplifies the power and wealth of the Byzantine Empire during its golden age. Struck in Constantinople or a regional mint, it reflects Justinian’s efforts to restore Roman grandeur through military conquests, legal reforms, and architectural achievements, including the Hagia Sophia.

The obverse  features a detailed bust of Justinian, draped and cuirassed, wearing a diademed helmet or crown, holding a cross or globus cruciger—symbols of his divine authority. The reverse  depicts Victory or an angel holding a cross, reinforcing the empire’s Christian foundation.

With a strong strike (4/5) and well-preserved details, this solidus remains a valuable piece of Byzantine numismatic history, embodying the legacy of one of Rome’s last great emperors.

A gorgeous and wonderful piece.
