Liberty Head Nickel - A Coin Marked By Controversy
The year was 1883, and the Liberty Head Nickel was created that year by the United States Mint. Due to an oversight, the initial mintage omitted the word CENTS, allowing con artists to plate the nickels with gold and passed them off as five-dollar gold pieces. After a hasty correction, the Liberty Head Nickel had a long lifespan until the Indian Head replaced it in 1913.
