Liberty Head $5 Half Eagle - The Rarities In This Series
In 1839, Mint engraver Christian Gobrecht created the Liberty Head $5 Half Eagle. The true rarities in this series are the branch mint issues from Dahlonega and Charlotte, such as the 1842-D Large Date, the 1842-C Small Date, and the most significant of these is the 1861-D, mostly because some of them were struck by the Confederacy at the beginning of the Civil War.
