Half Cents
Just one month after Washington, D.C. superseded Philadelphia as the nation’s capital, the half-cent piece was struck in July 1793. Made of 100% copper, it was valued at one two-hundredth of a dollar. All produced at the Philadelphia Mint, they were slightly smaller than a modern U.S. quarter. Coinage was discontinued by the Coinage Act of 1857.
