Cumberland Island, Georgia’s largest barrier island, features natural beaches free of human development, maritime forests and salt marshes. It is home to over 9,800 acres of protected Wilderness.

The reverse of the ATB Cumberland Island 5 oz. silver coin depicts a snowy egret taking flight over the island’s dunes. The reverse of the coin, as with all other America The Beautiful coins, displays the classic profile of George Washington that is shown on circulating U.S. quarters.

Cumberland Island is critical habitat for a variety of plants and animals including:

  • the most important sea turtle nesting habitat in Georgia – 18 miles of turtle-friendly shoreline (In fact the turtle was a popular consideration for this coin’s design)
  • Excellent shorebird, wading bird, neotropical migrant, raptor, and waterfowl habitat
  • nesting habitat for wading birds (wood storks, egret and heron species)

The America the Beautiful 5 oz. Silver Quarter Series began in 2010 to commemorate national parks, monuments, and historical sites. Five new coins are released each year. The 5 oouce silver bullion coins are enlargements of the same designs depicted on the quarters that are in normal circulation.
