– SOLDThe 50 Pesos Centenario, first issued in 1921 to commemorate Mexico’s 100th anniversary of independence, is one of the most iconic gold coins in numismatics. The 1945-dated issue is among the most common, as these coins were restruck in large numbers from the 1940s to the 1970s. Graded NGC MS65, this example is in gem condition, showcasing exceptional luster and detail.
The obverse features the "Winged Victory" (El Ángel de la Independencia), a symbol of Mexican independence. She holds a laurel wreath in her right hand, representing victory, and broken chains in her left, symbolizing freedom. In the background, the iconic Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl volcanoes rise, adding depth to the design. The inscriptions include "50 PESOS" on the left and "37.5 Gr. ORO PURO" on the right, signifying its pure gold content. The dual dates "1821 - 1945" mark Mexico's centennial of independence.
The reverse displays Mexico's national coat of arms, featuring an eagle perched on a cactus, devouring a snake. This iconic image is rooted in Aztec mythology and symbolizes the founding of Tenochtitlán (modern-day Mexico City). The inscription "ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS" encircles the top, representing the official name of the country.
