John Dannreuther describes the characteristics of the 1912 in his authoritative reference work United States Proof Coins, Vol. IV: Gold: "The color varies slightly from the mustard brown seen in 1911 and the Proofs of this year have a slightly brighter brown color. The smaller sand grains led to finer facets on the surface of the coins.
