Each of the sandblast proof issues in the Indian quarter eagle series has its own unique appearance when found with original surfaces. John Dannreuther describes the characteristics of the 1912 in his authoritative reference work United States Proof Coins, Vol. IV: Gold: "The color varies slightly from the mustard brown seen in 1911 and the Proofs of this year have a slightly brighter brown color.
