1898 $5 PCGS PR68 Deep Cameo CAC

$222,000.00 USD

According to Mint records, only 75 proof Liberty half eagles were struck in 1898, a slightly smaller mintage than the year before. It was the smallest proof production from 1894 through the end of the series. The coins were apparently delivered in quarterly batches, but delivery figures for the last two quarters are not available.

Fortunately, the 1898 issue enjoyed a higher survival rate than most proof dates of this era, and the surviving population probably numbers 30-40 examples in all grades today, including several coins in institutional collections. The reasons for the high survival rate are unknown, but it may be that the lower mintage figure caused contemporary collectors to prize this date more highly than coins of surrounding years, preserving them when they disposed of other issues that they perceived as more common when hard times forced them to sacrifice some of their assets.
