The obverse features a bust of Lady Liberty facing left, wearing a cloth cap (referred to as the "Capped Bust" design), with her hair falling below the cap and curling down her neck. Above her head is the word “LIBERTY,” and surrounding her are 13 stars, representing the original 13 colonies. The date (1808) is placed below the bust.

 

The reverse features a heraldic eagle with a shield on its chest. The eagle is holding arrows in one talon (symbolizing military readiness) and an olive branch in the other (symbolizing peace). Above the eagle is a ribbon with the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM” (Out of Many, One). The inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” surrounds the design.
