1790SO DA Gold 8 Escudos NGC AU55

$4,848.00 USD

Minted in Santiago, Chile in 1790 under the reign of Charles IV (as Prince of Asturias), the 8 Escudos gold coin marked the pinnacle of colonial Latin American minting. Bearing the "So" mintmark and "DA" assayer initials, this coin served as a vital trade and wealth preservation instrument throughout the Spanish Empire’s South American territories during a time of increased autonomy and economic expansion in the colonies.

Obverse: Displays the right-facing bust of Charles IV in classical cuirassed attire, surrounded by the Latin legend referencing his role as heir to the Spanish throne. Although still officially under Charles III's reign, coins dated 1790 may bear Charles IV's portrait in anticipation of his succession.

Reverse: Features the crowned Spanish shield flanked by the Pillars of Hercules, draped with the banner "PLUS ULTRA." The mintmark "So" (Santiago) and assayer initials "DA" (initials for assayer Don Damaso Alvarez) are placed near the shield, along with the denomination and date.

This specimen, certified NGC AU55, offers strong strike definition, residual mint luster in protected fields, and pleasing, minimally worn devices. The AU55 grade indicates it was lightly circulated yet retains much of its original brilliance and detail. With Santiago-minted 8 Escudos of this period being significantly scarcer in higher grades, this coin enjoys collector appeal among those specializing in Spanish colonial gold.
