Struck at the Montpellier Mint during the reign of Louis XIV, this 1650 Louis d'Or represents an apex of French numismatic artistry and political symbolism. Known as the "Sun King," Louis XIV centralized French monarchy and cultivated an aura of divine right rule, both of which were manifest in the iconography and production quality of his gold coinage. The Louis d'Or was introduced under his grandfather Louis XIII and evolved into one of the most recognized gold denominations in pre-Revolutionary Europe.
Obverse: Features a right-facing laureate bust of the young Louis XIV, with flowing locks and classical features — a nod to his identification with Apollo, the Sun God. The inscription “LVDOVICVS XIIII D G FR ET NAV REX” proclaims him King of France and Navarre by the Grace of God.
Reverse: Displays a floral cruciform motif of four crowned “L” monograms, alternating with fleurs-de-lis, with the Latin legend emphasizing royal sovereignty. This design reflects both dynastic identity and divine sanction.
Graded NGC MS65+, this specimen is currently the Finest Known for the issue and mint. It exhibits immaculate surfaces, full mint bloom, and an extraordinarily crisp strike for a hammered gold coin of this era — a combination virtually unseen in the 17th-century French series. Montpellier-mint examples are especially rare in high grades, as they often show softer strikes and more extensive handling.
