1731/0M Gold 12,800 Reis NGC MS61

$13,973.00 USD

The 1731/0M Brazil Gold 12,800 Réis, Minas Gerais Mint, graded NGC MS61, is an exceptional colonial-era overdate issue struck under King João V of Portugal, during one of the most prolific and economically significant gold production periods in world numismatic history. The coin represents the highest denomination of Brazilian gold coinage in the early 18th century and was minted from gold extracted directly from Brazil's interior — largely the Minas Gerais region.

Obverse: Features the laureate head of João V facing right, with a full Latin legend:
“IOANNES · V · D · G · PORT · ET · ALG · REX” — João V, by the Grace of God, King of Portugal and the Algarve.

Reverse: Shows the royal arms of Portugal on an elaborate crowned Baroque-style shield with draped and curled ornamental sides, a classic design for the João V series. The reverse legend and detail emphasize regal grandeur and dynastic continuity.

This particular example is notable for its rare 1731/0 overdate, with a visible underlying “0” beneath the final digit — a feature highly prized among collectors and referenced in KM 139. Struck in .917 fine gold, the coin weighs approximately 14.34 grams, aligning with the traditional standard for the 12,800 Réis denomination.

Graded NGC MS61, the coin exhibits solid luster, a well-centered strike, and overall sharp detail for a large Brazilian colonial gold issue. Minor contact marks are visible under magnification but do not significantly detract from its exceptional preservation for the type. As an early overdate from the Minas Gerais mint, it is especially scarce in Mint State condition.
